Edge’s Return: The Rated-R Superstar’s Comeback Story

4 months ago By Jhon Woug

Edge’s real name is Adam Copeland, who is a person with a lot of championships and memorable good moments in professional wrestling history. In 2011, it could have seemed that his career was over due to a threatening injury, but that was not the climax of Edge’s story. After an almost decade-long absence, his 2020 comeback was a story not only of resilience but of sheer will and undying love for the sport of wrestling. This article dissects Edge’s journey from early in his career to an extremely unexpected return and the impact that has on the profession.

Early Career and Rise to Stardom

Edge, with his real name being Adam Copeland, commenced his wrestling career in the mid-1990s. Edge was born in Ontario’s Orangeville, Canada, a young boy full of fascination for the wrestling sport. Sweet Daddy Siki, along with Ron Hutchison, are some of the trainers he went through before agaring his indie debut. His natural ability and charisma threw up the antennae of major wrestling promotions. In 1997 Copeland signed a deal with the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) and was given the character Edge, due to his character in itself being vampire-like. His first character was that of a dark loner who was seen entering the arena through the crowd. Only nondescript attired most of the time, this character trait helped make Edge an instantly recognizable fan favorite in the ring.

Edge really found his feet in his career by teaming up with his real-world best friend Christian together as a tag team.
With high-flyers and charismatic promos, this tandem became one of the most prosperous tag teams in WWE history. They held the Tag Team Championship seven times and were a part of some really unforgettable matches during the Attitude Era, notably the Tables, Ladders, and Chairs (TLC) matches against the Hardy Boyz and the Dudley Boyz.

THE RATED-R SUPERSTAR

Edge’s career took off when he left the tag division behind and donned his “Rated-R Superstar” persona instead; he was then severely edgy, controversial, and going to be able to do anything within its power to win. The turn by Edge to heel really loosened up the performer and allowed him to really show just how versatile he could be.

One of the defining moments in the career of Edge came when he captured the first-ever Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 21 in 2005. The victory provided him a contract for a future WWE Championship match, which he famously cashed in on John Cena at New Year’s Revolution 2006. This opportunistic victory helped boost him into the top heels in the WWE.

As long as the run of any, he was a multiple WWE and World Heavyweight Champion. The feuds against John Cena, The Undertaker, and Randy Orton, to name a few, will always have to be on any list of mid-2000s classics. Either as a baddie or a goodie, Edge had the potential to galvanize a boom or bust fan reaction in the split of a second, which really presents the kind of phenomenal talent the guy possessed.

The Career-Threatening Injury 2011 was the year when Edge’s career took an unanticipated turn. After successfully defending the belt at WrestleMania 27, it was in one riveting episode of Monday Night Raw when he announced how he was forced to retire because he was already suffering from cervical spinal stenosis—a great risk for paralysis, should he continue wrestling. The announcement came at a time when Edge was at his peak, and the wrestling world palpably gasped and collectively sent an apprehensive air around the legend: he had to step out of the ring.

Edge’s retirement was a sad moment in WWE trailblazing history. This was perhaps one reason why his farewell speech was so tear-jerking, as he thanked the turned-entertainment business-“Universe” and his fellow performers. Even after his in-ring career had a sudden finish, Edge continued to stay attached with WWE through many ways—commentary, guest appearances, among others.

Life After Retirement

Adam Copeland went on to accomplish other things after he had retired from wrestling. He did some acting, starring in serials such as “Haven,” “Vikings,” and “The Flash.” Again, thanks to his experience in WWE, where he developed his acting skills, Adam Copeland managed to do great in his new venture. He also kept making appearances at WWE events, sometimes being involved in special segments or giving guest commentary.

There was just something about wrestling that he couldn’t take out of him; despite all he had achieved outside the world of wrestling, Edge still never lost his affiliation with the sport. He stayed in touch with WWE and their roster, mentoring young wrestlers and advising them on potential matches. But a return to the ring looked truly beyond the pale given the severity of his injury.

Rumors started going around at the beginning of 2020 that Edge might be returning.

Fans went into a delirium as Edge’s music started in the arena, and he stormed to the ring, entering a WWE ring, for the first time in nearly a decade. Emotions ran incredibly high, with his appearance being an emotional moment for fans and Edge alike. If there were ever miracles in wrestling again, Edge’s being cleared to work in the ring was one. Forced into retirement with a life-threatening disorder that allowed for endless re-evaluations and training to even consider a return, the need to get back and the desire to be in front of the fans were all reflected in a physical conditioning he was in and—more importantly—in-ring performance.

The 2020 Royal Rumble was the beginning of the closing magazine chapter re-Edge. He was the 21st entrant into the match and went on to spare some superstars before finally eliminating him. He did not win that match, but his return outshone the show and proved a lot in regard to how much he had in him all along and how much the fire of wrestling burns within him.

Rivalry with Randy Orton

On his return, Edge managed to get involved in a hot feud with former friend and tag team partner Randy Orton. This storyline right off the history between them jumped out as one of the most interesting WWE has to offer. Being full of doubts regarding Edge’s return, Orton dusted off their history of trust and set the scene, building up to a number of great matches with each attack.

Their wars came to a head in a match at WrestleMania 36 that history called a “Last Man Standing” match. The contest infamously went down without an audience because of the coronavirus and was very vicious and emotional. In the end, Edge won the bout amidst a feel-good comeback story, solidifying his return—to prove he could still go at an incredibly elite level.

That carried on for several months into 2020, with the feud culminating in another high-stakes match at Backlash, heavily marketed as the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever.” Although he tore a triceps during the match, he was praised by many for his performance in that one bout, involving the intensity and storytelling needed to get through. That program with Orton really propelled two things into the forefront: Edge’s capacity for telling a good story and his capacity for delivering top-quality matches after being away from the ring for so long.

Continuing the Comeback
Still, the setback from the injury did not shake his determination to keep on coming back. He re-entered the ring early in 2021 for another run at the Royal Rumble match. Edge was able to make this work on January 31, 2021, getting into the match in number one to be the last man standing among 29 others to win.

With his victory, Edge became one of the few superstars to win a Royal Rumble match starting from the number one spot.

Winning at the Royal Rumble really solidified Edge’s spot in WrestleMania 37’s main event. His choice as an opponent for the coveted match was Roman Reigns, the reigning Universal Champion. In the story of the road to WrestleMania, it is all about talking, promos, promos, promos, facial expressions, hard talk, cutting things close, and essentially everything that involves Edge wanting to take what he believes to be his—his spot—on top of the WWE.
WrestleMania 37 was the setting for an epic triple threat between Edge, Roman Reigns, and Daniel Bryan. Though a loser, Edge proved he still has plenty of ring experience; he impressed millions of worldwide fans all through the match. This was largely hailed as one of the better matches by way of storytelling during the bout and the physical testimonials of each man competing.

What Edge’s WWE Return Means

The return of Edge in wrestling largely affected the sphere and, of course, his legacy itself. Every step of the way, his story was one of inspiration and determination: that anything is possible if there is a spirit sufficiently resolute and passionate about the chosen sphere of interest. The whole story of Edge resonated within the hearts of his fans and of his fellow wrestlers—that’s the price a person in professional wrestling has to pay and, through dedication and hard work, to be resilient.

For someone to return to the ring almost 10 years later and still be able to perform at that level can only be considered inspiring. This has been typified in his matches since returning: very physically based, emotionally charged storytelling, with an out-and-out connection with the audience. His presence led to a furthered profile for his opponents, proving that he can bring out the best from the men he shares his competition with.

More importantly, beyond the in-ring, he reaffirmed himself: With achievement in regaining relevance to the wrestling world, he had proven the possible result of displaying his dedication to proving himself to get into that ring and attaining a platform demonstrated as a leading example to other wrestlers who face the same sort of challenges. Critical to the story was proper medical evaluation and painstaking rehabilitation.

The future of Edge in WWE
As an active competitor as of 2024, the future for said wrestler in the organization seems bright still, upon his return. His return afterwards has opened doors to a million different ways the storylines and matchups could go and, therefore, has left fans guessing and salivating at what will be the next move by the Rated-R Superstar. Edge has openly said he will wrestle as long as he feels he still can at a genuine high level and keeps making a difference inside the ring. Edge’s return has also snowballed speculation about dream matches and possible feuds, with his association to new and existing talent that speaks volumes of storyline potential—eventually making new stars.

With experience and knowledge from the industry, Edge becomes a double-beneficial man for WWE—both as a performer and a mentor. The most likely streak within Edge’s remainder career is a title reign of the world championship belt. Further affirms his legacy, let fans never forget the reign of terror, memories of which fans reminiscence about it more than ever. Continuing to adapt and reinvent modes, this is needed to secure Angle’s longevity and guarantee its relevance and align anticipation in WWE’s affairs for years to come.

Conclusion
Edge’s career comeback story is without a doubt one of the most remarkable in the wrestling business. Since his early days as a tag team specialist, working his way from obscurity to a more prominent light as the Rated-R Superstar, to his shocking career-compromising injury and return, the story of Edge is one of resiliency backlit with passion and pure dedication to the sport. His return not only reinvigorated his career but also inspired a lot of fans and wrestlers. What has made Edge great is an ability to put together great storylines, produce excellent matches, and engage an audience on an emotional level.

He could go down as one of, if not the, all-time great in the history of professional wrestling. Each match and storyline will enhance a new level of his legacy, and the impact he has made on this business is obvious. WWE fans are excited for more of these as Edge takes his return to breaking news. According to a Rated-R Superstar, the future still promises the best matches from him. His has just been a push; a long story yet to be closed. Therefore, anything can happen regarding how great he will be with WWE in the days to come.
